The "Practical Plus" Katana (SH2073) is the latest addition to the Hanwei Japanese Samurai sword line, providing a very economical functional cutting sword as dependable as the Practical Katana (SH1070), but using more traditional fittings and construction methods. The Practical Plus Katana's high carbon blade is hand forged and differentially tempered with a HRC 60 edge and HRC 40 back while boasting a very prominent hamon (temper line). The Practical Plus Katana (SH2073) features genuine Same (Ray Skin) on the handle, with a leather like wrap (Tsuka Ito) specially developed for its gripping qualities. The long tang is double pegged for security. The fittings of the Practical Plus are decorated in a antiqued Japanese Dogwood motif with dragon menuki, and the handsome antiqued tsuba is of an iron "sunburst" design with a brass habaki.

The "Practical PRO" Katana (SH2162) has an extended tsuka and a thicker and longer blade. The blades are constructed from hand-forged, high-carbon steel and are differentially tempered using a traditional claying method. The Practical Pro has a fine polish to it compared to others in the series. The tsuka is wrapped with synthetic black leather for its gripping characteristics and is double-pegged for safety. The saya is done in a deep black lacquer with a black Japanese cotton sageo. The fittings (koshirae) are done in antiqued black iron. The katana is stylized with a round Kuruma tsuba, which represents the “Wheel of Dharma,” symbolizing the Buddhist concept of the Noble Eightfold Path. Keeping with Japanese traditions our Imperial Japanese Katana is crafted using only traditional materials and fittings. The Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (collar), and Kashira (pommel) are expertly made and finely crafted from black iron. The Habaki (blade collar) is hand made out of polished brass and each tsuka (handle) is covered in real black Same' (ray skin) and tightly wrapped in the traditional cross over style ito (braid) with green cord.

It takes time to produce swords of this quality and this is why our Imperial Japanese Katana cost more and are more difficult to acquire.
